T5DROnline Etiquette (from BrahmaDDT)
Note: Edited to clean language and add info.

I’ve been playing T5DR online for a few weeks now and noticed that there seem to be some general consensus for online etiquette. Noticing that no one had bothered to write them down I decided to take it upon myself to do so. I know that not absolutely everyone will be able to agree on these or adhere to them. Tough. Just keep in mind that these are not strict, set in stone rules to live by. But rather a general set of principles to keep in mind while you are playing online to avoid being an donkey.

Setup:
Generally most matches are played on 3 rounds, 60 second timer.

Lag:
The largest difference between playing online vs. offline is lag. Lag can range from virtually unnoticeable to causing the game to freeze. This lag can cause a lot of problems, especially if one opponent is lagged and the other isn’t. Green/Yellow bars are considered normal. Red/Black bars can heavily interfere with timing.

Lag spikes:
If the opponent is backing up/jumping away/supercharging, check your bars. More than likely either you or the opponent has encountered a lag spike into the black/red. The generally accepted thing to do here is back away until your/their bar goes back up to yellow/green then continue the fight. The reason for this is that if one side isn’t lagging and the other is, it makes it difficult to impossible for the lagging opponent to combo, block strings, punish, etc. If your opponent is courteous enough to not whale on you while you are lagging, you shouldn’t take a cheap shot and charge them with an unblockable shoulder (butt move). However, if the opponent doesn't seem to get it and hits you a few times after you hop back, go ahead and oblige them.

If both of you are still in the red/black and the match has like 30 seconds to go, I usually just say whatever and finish the fight. It's better than just sitting there for five minutes letting your game go to waste.

Throws:
Throws have been a heavily discussed topic in DRO and there are a lot of mixed feelings. Throws are a part of high level Tekken and have a valid place in the game. However, with the lag inherent in DRO, throws have become somewhat of an hot issue. Should you throw? How much throwing is acceptable?

On green bars, throws can be broken. On yellow bars it is difficult, but I have seen throws being fairly consistently broken here too, though how much was due to anticipation I can’t say. On red and black bars throws are virtually impossible to break on reaction. On red and black bars ducking throws is not a viable option.

My personal philosophy is that [throws are cheap moves for winning a match. Any connection below green bars is very bad]. I typically don’t throw unless the opponent attempts a throw first [or starts throwing first or is playing like a scrub (Scrubs are what players who play against online etiquettes are refered to).]

[Spamming 10-hits
Much like throwing; it is considered bad. It is frowned upon.]

Room Kicks:
As a host, you have to ability to kick people from your room. Here are some generally accepted reasons to kick/be kicked:

-Lag. If you come into a room and the ping drops and you cause lag, you will most likely be kicked. If you aren’t playing the match, it is hard to tell if someone is lagging or not. If the player is constantly missing juggles/punishers or constantly backing up/jumping then it is most likely that someone is causing lag.

-Having a different flag on your profile. This ties in to the lag issue. Usually the farther away a country is, the more lag you experience while playing. This is not always true, and unless there is a noticeable lag when the opponent comes in, I usually give them the benefit of the doubt and play a game with them.

-Throw spamming. If you’re using 3-4 throws per round people probably aren’t going to want to play you and you will most likely get kicked.

Misc.
-Repeatedly tapping 1 (square) so that the player side goes from 1p,2p,1p,2p, is a generally accepted way of saying "good game" in a room without a mic.
